Directed by former journalist Adhiraj is complete and is all set for release on March 28. It is an edge of the seat romantic thriller with and in the lead. Very rarely we come across movies that defy set sentiments and superstitions prevailing in Tamil film world. ‘ Silanthi‘, directed by journalist Aadhiraj, seems to be one such film. The title itself was deemed as an unfortunate thing in the industry circle. The reason behind the belief is that the hurdles faced by Sarath – Jyothika starrer ‘ Pachaikili Muthucharam‘, which was initially named as ‘ Silanthi‘. The title was considered as a doomed one and hence it was changed as ‘ Pachaikili Muthucharam‘.
It is a different that the film went on to become a big failure despite the sentimental amendments. Aadhiraj, however, has the courage to choose the ‘ill-fated’ title., who acted in Thankar Bachchan’s ‘Azhagi’, and Jayabaduri’s sister’s son Munna have teamed up for the movie. Even the selection of Fauziya, a woman cinematographer, is against a sentiment. Fauziya, who worked in the movie ‘ Uyir‘, was alleged by the producer with sluggish work that caused the delay of the movie.
Aadhiraj was unperturbed by the sentiment and went with his choice. Subsequently, Fauziya has lived up to his expectation by helping the director to finish the movie within 60 days. ‘‘ has thus defied twin sentiments by sticking to the title and cinematographer chosen by the director unmindful of what others think about both. The fact that the movie has been finished within very short span without any hiccup has proved the doomsayers wrong. Let us hope the film would further disprove the sentiments by becoming a big hit.
Debutant director Aathi has come out with a chilling and creepy experimental low- budget thriller Silanthi. The 101 minutes film freaks you out at the right moments, with a few frights. Aathi’s idea is to make a glamorous thriller with an eerie background and make the viewers frightened. He has succeeded largely thanks to cinematographer Fouzia Fathima’s intricate camera movements, fast-cutting editing by Satish Kurusova, haunting with excellent background score by M. Karthik who has used Indian instruments to give that jolt in fright inducing scenes. But above all it is Monica who has come out with a stunning performance as a newly married girl out on her honeymoon and hallucinating about ghosts around her. She is great in the nerve-wracking scenes and saves the film from its shaky script.
Her glamour and sensuousness when needed is an added attraction. The film’s weakness is the script as writer-director Aathi’s story line is wafer thin. He has been influenced by the Ram Gopal Varma school of ghost story telling (Bhoot, Vaastu Shastra etc) and films like The Shining, I know what you did last summer. The influence is nothing to be ashamed about, as Aathi with his limited script has been able to tell something new in presentation and packaging. Monica (Monica) and (Munna) is a newly married couple who go on a honeymoon to a friend’s island guest house. From the boatman who takes them to the island to the watchman at the guest house, they encounter eerie characters including a cook who receives them and we are told later died six months back!
At the old heritage bungalow, Monica starts getting hallucinations about somebody following and trying to attack her. Her husband is disturbed as dread is created in the minds of the characters as well as the watchers. Meanwhile mysteriously Monica’s friends who were working with her in the IT field in Bangalore are killed in gory fashion. The weary feeling creeps into Monica that she is going to be the next victim, as the killer or ghost comes to the island. Why this mysterious ghost is after the girls is told in a post interval flashback, which throws a surprise leading to the climax. The first half the director is able to create a creepy and eerie feeling, but in the second half he falters as he tries to connect IT world big city lifestyle with the happenings in the first half. There is an erotic mood throughout the film, without any vulgarity.
But where he has scored is that he has been able to create suspense through dread and fear, which makes it worth a scare. For a debutant director Aathi deserves a pat on his back for trying to be daringly different and breaking away from conventional formula films. Silanthi is worth a look. Verdict- Eerie Thriller.
